Ja'Marr Chase injury update: Latest news on the Cincinnati Bengals superstar

The Cincinnati Bengals have changed the designation of wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase on the team's injury report.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Bengals updated Chase's injury designation on Saturday. He was initially listed on the injury report as “rest.”

That was understandable considering Chase had limited practice all week despite not having a real injury. His absence due to a contract dispute likely meant he needed a few days to get back into shape.

However, the Bengals updated his designation on Saturday afternoon, adding an illness to his injured list ahead of their Week 1 opener against the New England Patriots.

Latest information on Ja'Marr Chase's injury

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Sunday morning, Chase woke up sick on Saturday but felt better later in the day.

Fowler also reported that the Bengals have “considered him in this week's schedule” in the event that he plays.

Chase's participation is still listed as questionable on the final injury report and it is still unclear how much workload he will get if he plays on Sunday.

The superstar wideout told reporters after practice on Friday that he was ready to play in Week 1 without a new contract, but also announced that he would not make a decision until closer to the start of the game.

Chase also acknowledged that he would likely be limited in the opening game if he played.

It was already questionable whether Chase would play in Week 1 due to a contract dispute, and having him on the injured list because of an illness only adds to concerns that the Bengals won't be at full strength on Sunday.

They are already expected to be without their star colleague Tee Higgins, who pulled a thigh muscle midweek and has been doubtful since Sunday morning.

If Chase doesn't play in the opener or is severely limited, the Bengals will likely rely heavily on Andrei Iosivas, Trenton Irwin, Mike Gesicki and Jermaine Burton. Second-year running back Chase Brown could also be more involved in the passing game.

The team also promoted wide receiver Kendric Pryor from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Bengals will release the inactive list at 11:30 a.m. ET, so that could be when the next update comes.
