Man arrested after fatal accident in Lenexa on Saturday

One person was killed and two others were injured in a high-speed crash on College Boulevard near Lackman Road in Lenexa Saturday night. Investigators suspect the crash was caused by drunk driving.

In a press release, Lenexa Police spokesman Master Police Officer Danny Chavez said Lenexa officers were called to the 15200 block of College Boulevard around 5:30 p.m. for a crash involving injuries.

Firefighters from Lenexa and Olathe were dispatched to the scene along with three Johnson County Med-Act ambulances.

The accident occurred on College Boulevard eastbound at Thompson Avenue.

Chavez said the accident involved a Subaru WRX and a Nissan Altima.

Both drivers were identified as adult males.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that both vehicles were traveling eastbound on the 15200 block of College Boulevard when the Subaru struck the Nissan, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway,” Chavez said.

The two vehicles came to a stop more than 120 meters apart.

Joe Folsom, spokesman for Johnson County's Med-Act program, said a 72-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and both male drivers were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Lenexa police confirmed that the woman killed was a passenger in the Nissan.

“The driver of the Subaru was released from the hospital around 8:30 p.m. and taken into custody by our officers on suspicion of driving under the influence,” Chavez said.

Johnson County Sheriff's Office booking logs show Lenexa police arrested a 31-year-old man on a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

Officers from the Lenexa Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit continue to investigate the accident.

The eastbound lanes of College Boulevard at Lakeview Avenue were closed for several hours while the investigation continued. All lanes were reopened around midnight.

Further details were not immediately available.
