Was Tyreek Hill arrested? Video shows Dolphins star arrested by police before week 1 game

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tyreek Hill was arrested by police for a traffic violation just hours before the Dolphins' season opener on Sunday.

At 10:50 a.m. ET, Schefter reported that Miami's star wide receiver was arrested just two hours before Week 1's opening kickoff against Jacksonville.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that he was “thrown to the ground and handcuffed for five minutes.”

Hill wants to lead not only the Dolphins but also the NFL in pass reception again. The 30-year-old is coming off a sensational 2023 season in which he led the league with 1,799 receiving yards, ranked first with 13 receiving touchdowns and ranked second with 119 receptions.

Video of Tyreek Hill's arrest

Hill was arrested early Sunday morning outside Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Dolphins. A bystander captured the arrest on video, which shows Hill in handcuffs with several officers at the scene.

ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported that Hill was “charged with reckless driving for his incident with police outside the stadium.” Hill allegedly got into a “verbal altercation with police” after being stopped. The officer then “handcuffed Hill” and he was “charged and released after the situation was deescalated.”

The Dolphins released the following statement on the matter.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was stopped and briefly detained by police for a traffic accident approximately one block from the stadium,” the statement said. “He has since been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer assistance. Tyreek and all other players involved arrived safely at the stadium and will be available for today's game.”

Will Tyreek Hill play in Week 1 against the Jaguars?

Despite the arrest coming so close to kickoff, Hill is expected to play in the Week 1 game against the Jaguars, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus and a statement from the team.

If for some reason something changes in the hours between the arrest and kickoff, Jaylen Waddle will likely be quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's primary target on Sunday. The fourth-year wide receiver, along with Hill, represents the second half of Miami's deadly receiver duo, as Waddle has recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in all three of his years in the NFL.

An absence of Hill would not only increase Waddle's involvement in the offense against the Jaguars, but also that of Malik Washington and Braxton Berrios.
