Line Fire near Highland burns more than 17,000 acres, forces evacuations: Live updates

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency due to the fire in San Bernardino County and announced new federal grants to assist in firefighting.

The emergency declaration allows the government to suspend certain regulations. For example, people affected by the fire can receive unemployment benefits more quickly or recover lost documents such as marriage and birth certificates. Certain regulations for hospitals and child care facilities will also be suspended.

The state also received a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA, Newsom said. The grant allows local agencies to apply for reimbursement of up to 75% of their firefighting costs.

“I thank President Biden for his swift approval to support the work of our firefighters and first responders battling this fire and protecting local communities,” Newsom said. “It is critical that residents of affected areas remain vigilant and prepare to evacuate immediately if requested by local authorities.”
