The King and Queen attended a service near Balmoral in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, who died two years after her death.

King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Crathie Kirk in Royal Deeside, where the late Queen regularly attended services during her stay in Scotland.

Charles, 75, waved and the small crowd of well-wishers waiting to see him enter the church in Aberdeenshire described him as “very lovely”.

Guest preacher Rt Rev Dr Shaw Paterson described the anniversary as “particularly significant and poignant for the Royal Family”.

Dr Paterson, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, said after the hour-long service that it had been a privilege to have Charles in the congregation, which also included Scotland's First Vicar John Swinney.

He said the King was “well known and loved” in the community around Balmoral and “an integral part of it”, just like his mother.

Many tributes were paid to the late queen. Official social media accounts of the monarchy and posted a photo of herself at a garden party at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 2019.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to the “70 glorious years of her reign”.

In a message on social media, Sir Keir said: “The late Queen's commitment to Britain and the Commonwealth taught us that no matter what challenges our country faces, the value of service always endures.”

“She was at the center of the life of this nation. Today we honor her memory.”

The private service took place at Crathie Kirk, where Queen Elizabeth II.

In his eulogy at Crathie Kirk, Dr Paterson said: “This weekend is of very special and poignant significance for the Royal Family, and indeed for all of us in Scotland, across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.”

“8 September marks the second anniversary of the death of Her Majesty The Queen and the accession of His Majesty to the Throne.”

He added: “I have remembered the Royal Family in my prayers, as well as all the people of this community and the entire nation and Commonwealth.”

The service was led by Rev. Kenneth MacKenzie, vicar of Braemar and Crathie parish and chaplain to the King.

Rev. MacKenzie cared for the late Queen in her final days and supported the Royal Family after her death.

To commemorate the anniversary of the Queen's death, the BBC's Songs Of Praise will be broadcast from Crathie Kirk for the first time.

The recorded programme includes a new melody commissioned by the King entitled ‘Crathie’, which is sung in honour of the Church.

The King was staying at Balmoral, where the late Queen died on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96.

The Aberdeenshire residence has been passed down from generation to generation within the royal family after Prince Albert purchased it for Queen Victoria in 1852.

On Saturday, King Charles and Camilla visited the near the Braemar Gathering Highland Games.
