New York Giants lose former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver

PITTSBURGH – A former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver was injured while warming up for the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon and will miss his team's Week 1 game.

Olszewski was limited throughout the Giants' practice week after suffering a groin injury in his team's second preseason game against the Houston Texans on August 17.

He should become New York's best punt returner and help out as a key special teamer while also providing depth at the receiver position.

Because Olszewski was injured after players had already been reported from active duty, the Giants cannot recall or promote another player from active duty and will play with a smaller roster against the Minnesota Vikings.

Olszewski spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Steelers, appearing in a total of 18 games during that time. During his time with the team, he caught nine passes for 63 yards as a receiver.

Olszewski played 108 snaps for Pittsburgh in 1922, including 36 as a kick returner and 50 as a punt returner.

He played two games with the Steelers in 1923 before being released on October 21. The Giants picked him up and signed him to their practice squad two days later, on October 23.

At the end of the season, Olszewski played in ten games for New York, culminating in a punt return touchdown on December 31 against the Los Angeles Rams.

He went undrafted out of Bemidji State in 2019 and began his career with the New England Patriots. He spent three years with the organization and was named to the All-Pro first team as a punt returner in 2020 after leading the league in return yards in that role.

Olszewski left the Patriots after the 2021 season and later signed a two-year contract with Pittsburgh as a free agent.
