Newly married nurse from Oregon found dead days after her disappearance – neighbor accused of murder

An Oregon nurse was found dead on Saturday, September 7, days after she went missing. Melissa Jubane, 32, disappeared days after returning home from her wedding in Hawaii. Her body was found after a three-day search, and her 27-year-old neighbor is now suspected of murder.

Jubane was a cardiac nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in southwest Portland. Friends and family became concerned after she failed to show up for her morning shift on Sept. 4, according to Beaverton police.

After receiving a call asking to check on Jubane's well-being at her apartment, officers began searching for the missing nurse. They were met by staff at the apartment complex. Officers were unable to locate Jubane at the apartment in the Five Oaks neighborhood of Beaverton. Her remains were found by police on Friday evening, September 6, more than two days after the welfare check.

On August 4, Jubane married Bryan Llantero in Haleʻiwa, O'ahu on the island of Honolulu. Her husband last heard from her around 6 a.m. when she failed to show up at the hospital, KHON reported.

In a Facebook post, Beaverton police said neither officers nor family members were able to reach Jubane “because her phone appeared to be turned off.” “In addition, searches of Melissa's bank and credit card records did not reveal any new information about her whereabouts,” it added.

On September 4, Jubane was reported missing in the national law enforcement databases. Police said her neighbor eventually became a suspect.

“After an extensive investigation, it was determined that one of Melissa's neighbors, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert of Beaverton, was involved in her disappearance. Subsequently, Schubert was arrested this evening and charged with Melissa's murder. Melissa Jubane's remains have been recovered,” the post reads.

Police added that the investigation is ongoing and asked anyone with information about the case to call 503.526.2280.

Schubert was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder, according to jail records obtained by the New York Post. Schubert was a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023, Fox 12 reported.

After Jubane and Llantero married on August 24, they held a ceremony with friends and family the next day. The two met in Hawaii and were together for over 10 years. They got engaged on Oahu last year.

The two flew to Washington on September 1 to spend Labor Day with Jubane's family. The next day, Jubane drove to her home in Oregon. Jubane's mother-in-law said she would stay at the apartment because it was close to her job.

“We don’t deserve this”

Jubane's cousin Onilobes Allan paid tribute to her on Facebook, describing her as “down to earth” and “funny.” “These are the people our government needs to protect so we have a chance to live in peace and happiness in the world. Unfortunately, she was taken advantage of and killed by someone very evil. I call on the government to enact laws that protect good citizens. My family has served in the United States Armed Forces since WWII to this day and we do not deserve this,” Allan wrote. “To all who it concerns, we need JUSTICE FOR MELISSA and for all good people in this country, the USA.”

“We are heartbroken by the news of the passing of our Providence St. Vincent nurse and colleague Melissa Jubane. This is a shock to all of us and her colleagues are mourning her loss. Melissa was an exceptional nurse. We appreciate all the outpouring of condolences from the community. Melissa was a Providence person and we will miss her,” Providence St. Vincent Hospital said.
