Church holds first Sunday service after the sudden death of its pastor

PIPERTON, Tenn. (WMC) – No one knew what would happen next after the devastation at Kirk Baptist Church in Fayette County. Its pastor, Bobby Mullins, and his wife, Wanda, both died in a horrific car crash in Southaven earlier this week.

The group came together to honor the man who brought them so much joy. Monica Burrows is one member who said Bobby and Wanda are in a better place.

“We are all saddened that Brother Bobby and Wanda have passed away, but the truth is that death is just an invitation from God into his palace,” Burrows said.

Brother Charles Pratt was the man entrusted with taking over the first service after the accident. He said he asked the members what to do and the answer was clear.

“It became clear very quickly that he wants us to move forward. He wants us to continue doing what we've been doing. And hopefully some of these things will help the church evolve into what it needs to become,” Pratt said.

Burrows said she heard a reading during the service that really stuck with her and that could help someone cope with a loss.

“Death is an invitation from God to the palace for the righteous man. He is with the Lord, and if we acknowledge him as Lord and Savior, we too will be with him,” Burrows said.

The Mullins family posted on Facebook on September 5, asking anyone reading their update to “take a moment to evaluate where you are in your relationship with Jesus Christ.”
