Mike Williams of the Jets will probably play little against the 49ers

The Jets' new wide receiver, Mike Williams, will make a limited appearance in Monday night's game against the 49ers.

Jets coach Robert Saleh said Williams will have a strict game count when he returns from his ACL injury and subsequent surgery that ended his 2023 season.

Saleh said even though Williams appears ready for a bigger role, the Jets will hold him back to start the season.

The Jets did the same thing last season with running back Breece Hall when he returned from an ACL injury.

In the first few weeks of the season, Hall's appearances were limited.

“[Williams] could be ready for 60 games and we're still going to use him very wisely,” Saleh said. “Breece is no different. Breece was ready to go, but we wanted to make sure we were thinking long-term. He's going to have a lot of impact on this game, but at the same time we're going to be smart with him because we're looking at the whole season, not just Week 1.”

Williams missed most of training camp but returned to team practice last week and said he was ready to play against the 49ers on Monday night.

The Jets began training to prepare for the 49ers on Thursday, and DE Haason Reddick remained out.

The Jets' most intensive preparation days are Thursday and Friday, before light training on Saturday before Monday's game.

Reddick is unlikely to play Monday as he continues to wait for a new contract. Saleh said he is not ruling it out yet and Reddick could still play Monday.

“It's doable,” said Saleh. “Our opponents only had two guys show up for practice. They're trusting the veterans who know how to do things right to get ready for the game.”

Substitute OL Wes Schweitzer did not practice on Thursday due to a hand injury.

OT Tyron Smith was limited, but only to give him a break.

49ers star RB Christian McCaffrey was only able to participate in limited training on Thursday due to a calf/Achilles tendon injury.
