Detroit beats Los Angeles 26-20 in overtime thriller

David Montgomery's 1-yard touchdown run in overtime helped the Detroit Lions to a home win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. Montgomery finished the game with 91 yards, complementing 40 yards and a touchdown from his backfield partner Jahmyr Gibbs.

The Lions are 1-0 while the Rams are down 0-1.

Detroit led for most of the game thanks to Gibbs' run, a 52-yard touchdown pass from receiver Jameson Williams and two field goals from Jake Bates, a rookie kicker making his NFL debut. Bates converted a crucial 32-yard pass with 17 seconds left to send his team into overtime.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 34 of 49 passes for 317 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His only touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard pass to Cooper Kupp that kept LA ahead until the final seconds.

Stafford played the second half without star wideout Puka Nacua, who was out with a knee injury.
