“We think of television more like traditional television”

While it would be unfair to say that Marvel Studios' foray into streaming was a failure, it also didn't go quite as we – or they – hoped.

It introduced too many new characters (leaving many in limbo) and disappointed some shows. Now Marvel Studios is going back to the drawing board and approaching television in a new way.

This has led to Daredevil: Reborn revamped and the studio is taking a more traditional approach to storytelling for the small screen. Instead of producing the series like theatrical films, they are now overseen by showrunners and produced like any other series.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Streaming, Television and Animation at Marvel Studios, provided further insight into this new direction for Marvel Television.

“Now,” Winderbaum says: “We think of television more in terms of traditional television, where there might be multiple seasons, where we can hopefully see the characters grow in the culture for many years. One thing we're doing is we're developing many shows at the same time now.”

He adds: “So in some ways we're doing television more traditionally, writing multiple pilots and series bibles before we decide what we want to produce and actually bring to the screen. That gives us the opportunity to experiment and also plan all sorts of different Marvel sandboxes.”

Now that Marvel Studios has figured this out, it feels like we are in for the same level of consistently strong storytelling that we know from early MCU television series, like WandaVision And Loki.

Elsewhere in the interview, Winderbaum commented on the vision TV series are distributed by Agatha – All the time Showrunner Jac Schaeffer to Star Trek: The Next Generation Terry Matalas from season 3.

“[Matalas] and Jac have spoken, and this show is really a love letter to everything that Jac has built before, and it also continues in a way that is unique to this filmmaker,“, explains Winderbaum. “There is a long tradition at Marvel, whether it is [director] Shane Black takes over the baton from [Iron Man and Iron Man 2 filmmaker] Jon Favreau for Iron Man 3 or the Russos take over the baton [from Joss Whedon] in the Avengers.”

“Just like the comics, these franchises benefit from different storytellers and different artists playing with the material in new ways.”

2025 will be released Daredevil: Reborn And Ironheart on Disney+, but it probably won't be until 2026 or 2027 before we see Marvel Studios' revamped approach to television in full.
