Rape and murder case of a medical intern in Calcutta:

The Supreme Court is currently hearing the ex officio case related to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is hearing the case.

During the last hearing, the court had asked the CBI – the central agency investigating the case – for a status report on the investigation so far. The top court had also asked the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government to submit a status report on the investigation into thousands of people breaking into the hospital.

While Attorney General Tushar Mehta appears for the central authority, senior advocate Kapil Sibal represents the government of West Bengal.

Thousands of people in West Bengal and other parts of the country protested against the rape and murder of the duty doctor on August 9. Sanjay Roy – a volunteer – was arrested in the case.

Protests against rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata

Thousands of people in West Bengal and other parts of the country are protesting against the rape and murder of the duty doctor on August 9. Over 130 protests took place in 25 countries, including major cities such as Stockholm, Sydney and New York. The protesters – many dressed in black – held vigils, chanted in Bengali and chanted slogans in solidarity with the victim.

Sanjay Roy – a volunteer – was arrested in this case.
