What to expect from Apple's iPhone 16 launch

Apple's main launch event will take place on Monday, September 9, at its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

This is one of the company's biggest annual presentations, where it will unveil the iPhone 16 lineup alongside significant updates to its popular AirPods and Apple Watch lines.

Apple is also expected to introduce “Apple Intelligence,” a new suite of AI-powered tools that will improve the user experience across all devices.

According to Bloomberg, here is a breakdown of the announcements expected at Monday's event:

  • Apple will introduce four new iPhone models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
  • The non-Pro models will see minor changes, including faster processors and 8GB of memory that supports Apple Intelligence and other features.
  • The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus retain the same design as last year's versions, with screen sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches and aluminum bodies.
  • You also get the action button currently found on the Pro models, as well as vertically stacked rear cameras that support spatial video recording and enable 3D clips that can be viewed with Apple's Vision Pro headsets.
  • The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max retain the design of the iPhone 15 Pro line, with one noticeable change: the displays are increased to 6.3 inches (previously 6.1 inches) on the smaller model and 6.9 inches (previously 6.7 inches) on the Max version.
  • The Pro models also feature bezels that are now about a third narrower, giving a sleeker overall look.
Both Pro models support Apple Intelligence with 8GB of memory and faster chips with an improved neural engine optimized for AI.
  • Camera upgrades include a move from a 12-megapixel lens to a 48-megapixel lens for the ultra-wide-angle camera, which matches the megapixel count of the standard wide-angle camera on last year's model.
  • The smaller iPhone 16 Pro will also get a 5x optical zoom on the telephoto lens (previously 3x) to keep up with the Max version.
  • A dedicated touch-sensitive button on the right side of the phone allows users to take photos and videos; it works similarly to the shutter button on a DSLR camera.

AirPods

  • Apple is preparing two new AirPods models to replace the second-generation entry-level earphones and the third-generation mid-range model.
  • Both new versions will look similar to the AirPods Pro and feature a new casing, USB-C charging and improved audio quality.
  • The mid-range version has a higher-quality case with a speaker, making it easier to locate with Apple's Find My feature, as well as noise cancellation that rivals the AirPods Pro.
  • Apple is also working on hearing health features, including hearing screenings and the ability to use AirPods to replace hearing aids, but some features may be delayed.

Apple Watch

  • For the first time in two years, Apple is preparing to update all Apple Watch models simultaneously, including a new low-end Apple Watch SE, a mid-range Series 10 model, and an Ultra 3.
  • The Apple Watch Ultra sees only minor improvements, with the focus on internal upgrades rather than external changes.
  • The Series 10 model features an updated look with slightly larger screen size options and a thinner watch case.
  • A key new health feature, sleep apnea detection, attempts to determine if the wearer has sleep apnea and suggests further testing with a doctor, but this feature may not be available on day one.

Apple Intelligence

Apple's new AI platform will be presented, which focuses on summarizing messages and notifications. However, many important functions will not be available until next year.
