Suspect in custody after threatening several New Jersey schools; Woodbury and Deptford school districts closed

WOODBURY, N.J. (WPVI) — A suspect is in custody after an online threat against several New Jersey schools led to the closure of some school districts on Monday.

Woodbury police identified the suspect as a minor and said the investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The threat was directed at Woodbury City Public Schools, Deptford Township School District, Haddon Heights School District and Glassboro Public Schools.

Schools in the Woodbury and Deptford school districts will be closed on Monday.

Woodbury City Public Schools officials said they found the threat implausible but that schools would be closed as a precaution.

Due to school closures, no transportation services will be offered to students on Monday, according to authorities. This also applies to students at Rowan College of South Jersey and Gloucester County Institute of Technology.

“We are working closely with the Woodbury City Police Department and Chief Ryan to give them the time they need to thoroughly investigate and track down the source of this threat. And as stated, there is no immediate indication that the threat is legitimate,” the district wrote in an online statement.

The Deptford Township School District also said the decision to close was made out of an abundance of caution.

Transportation to GCIT and other schools outside the district will not be provided, the district said, and all extracurricular activities have been canceled.

“We will continue to work with law enforcement to determine our next course of action and ensure the safety of our schools and all of our Spartans,” the district said in an online statement.

The Glassboro and Haddon Heights school districts remain open, but with increased police presence.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police at 609-221-6721.
