Kolkata murder case: ‘Very shameful’, says BJP on Mamata’s ‘conspiracy allegation’ before central government | Latest news from India

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for accusing the central government of being complicit in the public outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor-student in Kolkata last month.

The rape and murder of the junior doctor in a seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 has sparked nationwide protests. The case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla described Banerjee’s comments as “shameful” and demanded the prime minister’s resignation.

“It is very shameful that today, when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should resign, she is making allegations instead of taking responsibility. She is saying that this is all a conspiracy,” Poonawalla told ANI.

“Today, the Supreme Court has said that there was a delay of 14 hours in filing the FIR. Is the Supreme Court part of the conspiracy? … She has no right to hold the post…”

During the hearing in the Supreme Court on Monday, a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud observed that there was a significant delay of at least 14 hours in filing the First Information Report (FIR) in the case, pointing out that this raised serious concerns about the investigation process.

The court also expressed concern over the absence of a key document required for the paramedic's autopsy and directed the CBI to investigate the incident.

The Supreme Court also ordered the immediate removal of photographs of the victim from all social media platforms to protect the dignity and privacy of the deceased.

What Mamata Banerjee said

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the central government was conspiring to act on public outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor in a government hospital last month. She also accused some Left parties of being involved.

“I have never offered any money to the family of the deceased doctor, this is nothing but slander. I have told the parents that our government will stand behind them if they want to do anything in memory of their daughter. I know when to say what,” Banerjee said, according to PTI.

“This (the protest following the RG Kar incident) is definitely a conspiracy of the central government and some left parties are also involved in it. Some people are taking advantage of the unrest in the neighbouring country. They have forgotten that India and Bangladesh are two different nations,” she said.
