Murder rate in Dallas rises, violent crime overall falls for third year

Violent crime in Dallas has declined for the third year in a row.

Crime trends are the focus of a meeting Monday afternoon at Dallas City Hall.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia is expected to present a three-year evaluation of his department's plan to reduce violent crime.

According to notes from Monday's public meeting, Dallas saw a 19.2% decrease in average violent crime from May 2021 to April of this year.

While the report shows a 7.2% increase in murders compared to the last three years, it points out that while the number of murders and serious assaults has declined each year, they are still higher than pre-Covid levels.

The report details the three-phase plan and its implementation, focusing on hotspot areas, inter-agency collaboration in uncovering criminal networks and using services to intervene and prevent repeat offenders.

The meeting on Monday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
