Taylor Swift-inspired corn mazes in Ohio and Maryland go viral: “She’s really something special”

Swifties now have the chance to check out festive fall masterpieces inspired by pop star Taylor Swift.

Two farms in Maryland and Ohio are making headlines after photos of detailed Swift-themed corn mazes made the rounds online.

People are apparently trying to figure out how the complicated patterns are constructed in the mazes, while others are jumping to the conclusion that aliens are now Swift fans.

Duke Wheeler, manager and owner of Wheeler Farms in Whitehouse, Ohio, has been in the corn maze business for over 20 years and has run Wheeler Farms since 1990, he told Fox News Digital.

Wheeler Farms is traditionally a Christmas tree farm, but employees began building mazes to help pass the time until winter.

“In winter you work hard, [and then] you don't have a lot of work. So we got a facility called the Butterfly House where we import butterflies from all over the world, and then we got a 16-acre cornfield from there and started building mazes,” Wheeler said.

Each year, Wheeler Farms presents a corn maze with a new theme based on current events – from the life cycle of a butterfly to Sarah Palin.

That year, Wheeler sought advice from his daughter and grandchildren, who encouraged him to look to Swift for inspiration.

“She is truly special,” Wheeler said.

The process of creating the detailed design takes time and a lot of corn, he said.

“We plant the corn at a normal time in the spring. This year it was a little later because of the rains. We've had a lot of water here, so we plant it as normal. And then when it's about 4 to 6 inches tall, we design the maze,” Wheeler said.

“We had an artist draw [the design] and then we try to create the paths in the images using GP coordinates and that's it. We cut the corn. [We’ve] Prune the plants a few times in the last two months so they aren't too tall. You know, people like to walk around in corn stalks.”

Wheeler said that due to the increased interest, he wants to step it up a gear this year and make sure it is “incredible.”

“It's just being with family and friends, no cell phones and just having fun,” he added.

Carol Paul, owner of the Maryland Corn Maze in Gambrills, Maryland, was also inspired by Time Magazine's Person of the Year when choosing the theme for this year's corn maze.

Carol Paul and her team were inspired by her son and daughter-in-law's best friend to use Taylor Swift as the main theme for the Maryland Corn Maze.

It was her son's friend who first suggested the idea of using Swift as the center of the maze, and Paul didn't think it was the right idea at first.

“I was really worried at first… [my daughter-in-law] said, 'She's the healthiest thing there is,' so I started watching the show and I was like, 'I think that's true. There's nothing bad about her,'” Paul told Fox News Digital.

Paul thought about how much her daughter-in-law loves the pop star and came to the conclusion that Swift fans could be the perfect audience.

“I started thinking, ‘You know what? It’s [my daughter-in-law’s] “The age group decides who comes here. It is the mothers who decide, or the girlfriends who decide what to do on the weekend,” said Paul.

Paul consulted with her daughter-in-law to find out everything about Swift.

Typically, Paul and her team start developing maze ideas about a year before the next season begins and need a final design by February so they can start planting corn.

“We're planting until the end of June, and we're planting one rectangle at a time, planting the whole field, and then we go in and we do good old arithmetic, and we put jeeps in and we spray paint markers, we put string and markers around it, and then we just kill the corn on those paths,” Paul said.
