Haason Reddick has stayed away from the New York Jets for months, refusing to discuss failed contract negotiations with the team that signed him in April. The star pass rusher's strike will last through Monday, according to ESPN, meaning Reddick will forfeit nearly $800,000 if he misses the Jets' primetime season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

Jets coach Robert Saleh acknowledged this week that it would be “fair” to expect Reddick's absence against the 49ers, but still left open the possibility that the former Philadelphia Eagles star could make his debut. As of Monday morning, Reddick was still on the team's reserve/non-reporting list, from which he would have to be activated in order to play. The Jets gave him that designation at the start of training camp, which Reddick skipped entirely.

According to ESPN, Reddick has already incurred more than $5 million in NFL fines for his absence and will have to forfeit nearly $800,000 in additional game wagers for each additional week he sits out.

The soon-to-be 30-year-old edge rusher was signed for a conditional third-round draft pick in April and was expected to be the team's best outside linebacker upon arrival. Reddick even expressed his own excitement to be part of Saleh's defense in an introductory press conference. Behind the scenes, the two sides quickly distanced themselves over an alleged misunderstanding regarding Reddick's contract. The veteran, after all, had come from Philadelphia in large part because he wanted a steep raise.

Reddick demanded a trade from the Jets in August, but general manager Joe Douglas insisted in a team statement that New York would not comply with the requestand argued that “we have been clear, direct and consistent in our position” regarding contract negotiations since the Pro Bowler was signed in the spring.
