17-year-old wanted for death of 18-year-old in Lumberton

Police are searching for a 17-year-old in connection with the death of an 18-year-old in Lumberton.

The Robeson County Sheriff's Office is looking for 17-year-old Kameron Carter of Lumberton.

Carter, who is charged with first-degree murder, is wanted in connection with the death of 18-year-old Damian C. Chavis of Scotland County.

According to the sheriff's office, Chavis was found dead Thursday lying in the street in the 3500 block of East 7th Street Road in Lumberton.

According to Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins, due to the nature of the crime and even though the suspect is under 18, law enforcement is legally allowed to display Carter's photo to aid in their manhunt.

Law enforcement must remove Carter's photo from the internet and all social media following his arrest, but the photo may still be found on other websites, Wilkins said.

The Robeson County Sheriff's Homicide Unit is investigating the case. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information on Carter's whereabouts or the case is asked to call the Robeson County Sheriff's Office at 910-671-3170 or 910-671-3100.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for the family, Chavis had recently graduated from Scotland High School and planned to join the Richmond Senior High School marching band.
