Testimony continues in trial of man accused of killing cyclist on Rickenbacker Causeway

MIAMI – Testimony continued Monday in the trial of Kadel Piedrahita, who is accused of murdering a 48-year-old father of three on the Rickenbacker Causeway in 2019.

Piedrahita, now 46, shot Alex Palencia on August 14, 2019, on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami. He is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Piedrahita claims the shooting was self-defense. According to prosecutors, the shooting began with a feud between the two, which culminated in a scuffle and the subsequent killing, which was broadcast live.

On Monday, jurors heard the end of the testimony of a Miami police officer who initially responded.

They are also expected to question witness Cesar Sosa. The prosecutor said Piedrahita threatened him with a weapon.

The shooting was captured on multiple video sources, many of which have been previously seen by local media, but some are being presented to jurors for the first time.
