Destin Daniel Cretton to direct Spider-Man 4

Destin Daniel Cretton does everything a spider can.

The filmmaker behind it Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in talks to take over the management Spider Man 4This move puts an end to speculation about who will spin the web for one of Hollywood's biggest franchises.

Cretton will bring fresh blood to this iteration Spider Manwhich stars Tom Holland and is a co-production between two different studios, Sony and the Disney-owned Marvel Studios. And it will make him the fourth director to tackle a Spidey solo film. Jon Watts directed the previous three films starring Holland, while Marc Webb directed the two Amazing Spider-Man Films with Andrew Garfield. Sam Raimi directed the trilogy with Tobey Maguire.

Sony and Marvel declined to comment.

The Holland Spider-Man films grew into a $1 billion franchise, with Spider-Man: No Way Home lured pandemic-weary audiences out of their homes and grossed nearly $2 billion after its release in December 2021. The film also starred Maguire and Garfield.

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are again responsible for the scripts, while Marvel boss Kevin Feige and former Sony boss Amy Pascal serve as producers.

Sources say that Spider Man 4 runs instead of crawling, is moving full steam ahead and will start shooting early next year.

It is unclear what the story will look like, No way home ended with the world forgetting that teenage Peter Parker was the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. This memory erasure also affected the people closest to him, including MJ (Zendaya), who no longer even know who Peter is. In June 2023, Holland told The Hollywood Reporter that he and the producers recently held a series of meetings about a possible fourth installment. “The first few meetings were about, 'Why should we do this again?' And I think we've found the reason why,” Holland said.

Cretton is very popular at Marvel. His Shang Chi is considered a highlight in the post-Avengers: Endgame Phase of the films, and he was on board to direct the mega-budget Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but last November, production was halted due to a change in the project's production schedule and a change in circumstances due to Jonathan Majors' assault trial. Marvel has always wanted to find another film for him.

The fact that he landed the Spidey gig is also a vote of confidence in his work on Miracle ManMarvel Television’s Disney+ series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, which is currently in post-production.

The filmmaker will continue to direct a live-action adaptation of Narutoand a sequel to Shang-Chi, but it's unclear how Spider-Man will impact those projects.
