Teenager killed, 2 others injured when SUV collides with trailer on Cape Cod

An 81-year-old Cape Cod man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash on Aug. 30 that left a 14-year-old boy dead and two others seriously injured, police said. Peter Richmond of Yarmouth Port is charged with involuntary manslaughter, Yarmouth police said. The charges came more than a week after an investigation by Yarmouth police and accident reconstruction teams. The 14-year-old victim was identified as John Hughan of Norwell. Police said Hughan was working on a boat trailer with his uncle on the side of the road on North Main Street when the crash occurred. Richmond's 2020 Cadillac Escalade struck the trailer from behind, fatally injuring the teen, police said. The trailer was disabled due to a broken axle and Hughan and others had stopped to make repairs. Around 1 p.m., police received several 911 calls reporting the crash near the intersection of North Main Street and Great Western Road. Hughan was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries. Richmond remained at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation, authorities said after the crash. Despite previous efforts to implement traffic calming measures, residents believe more needs to be done. “I don't know how this could have happened – in broad daylight, the guy almost ran off the road,” said David Fellows, who lives nearby. “Unfortunately, this is not the first, second or third accident we've seen here,” said Sam Medeiros, a resident. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact police at 508-775-0445.
