Will Ferrell covers Fleetwood Mac for PayPal in new commercial

Can you hear Will Ferrell calling your name?

Well, he is, sort of, in a new ad for PayPal. In a 60-second spot that's part of the digital wallet company's biggest advertising campaign yet, Ferrell belts out a version of Fleetwood Mac's “1988 Everywhere” to demonstrate that the PayPal debit card can now be added to users' Apple Wallets, enabling contactless payments anywhere Apple Pay is accepted.

The commercial will air tonight on ESPN before the NFL's first Monday Night Football game of the season and will appear on various networks through the end of the year.

The partnership with Apple is part of a broader suite of features called PayPal Everywhere, which the company launched on September 5. In addition to contactless payments through Apple Wallet, users can set up an automatic top-up feature to continuously top up their balance from another account.

PayPal also now offers 5% cash back (up to $1,000 monthly) for each category selected by the user, which Ferrell also references in his musical performance. The category-specific cash back can be combined with rotating offers from retail partners such as DoorDash, Domino's, Sephora, Instacart and Petsmart.

“PayPal is truly everywhere and more rewarding than ever,” said Geoff Seeley, chief marketing officer at PayPal, in a statement. “This shows the exciting direction we are heading in as we continue to evolve PayPal into a simple, secure and rewarding way to shop anywhere.”

The campaign, created by BBH USA, also marks the launch of a new visual identity for PayPal that will run across field, digital, streaming, radio, audio and social media.

Raising the brand profile coincides with another major effort PayPal has planned for 2024: building an advertising network.

The company announced in May that it was building an advertising business that would leverage the vast amounts of consumer data it has collected since its founding in 1998. To that end, the company hired Mark Grether as senior vice president and general manager of PayPal Ads. Grether had just successfully completed a similar assignment at Uber, which recently announced that it would reach $1 billion in advertising revenue this year.
