Austin Wells' four RBIs help the Yankees to a 10-4 victory over the Royals

The Yankees started slowly but scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Kansas City Royals 10-4.

Here are some insights…

– NY had trouble taking advantage of runners in scoring position for most of the evening, going 0 for 5 in the first six innings. Aaron Richter came through in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single to tie the game and Austin Wells gave the Yanks a 7-4 lead with a three-run blast-off James McArthur.

Gleyber Torres In the eighth inning, he followed up with a single to center, his third hit of the night, and then Wells hit a double off the wall in left field to make the game 10-4.

– The Yankees appeared sloppy at the beginning of the game as they made mistakes in Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Wells allowed leadoff man Tommy Pham to reach first base after a stolen base and advance to third base. Salvador Perez hit a single into the center to make it 1-0 before Carlos Rodon finally calmed down and made the last two outs of the inning. The left-hander needed 27 pitches to get through the first inning.

Perez again outdid Rodon in the third, hitting a solo home run to center that gave the Royals a 2-0 lead.

– Perez came back to bat in the fifth inning with two outs and hit a pop-up into shallow right field, but Torres and Juan Soto communicated incorrectly and dropped the ball, so that Bobby Whitt, Jr. to score from first base and tie the game 3-3. Rodon's inconsistency continued in the sixth, allowing a home run that Hunter Renfroe This gave KC a 4-3 lead.

Rodon's final tally: four runs (three earned) on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts over 6.0 IP.

– New York calls up star talent Jason Dominguez before the game and made it clear that he is “here to play almost every day.” The 21-year-old was batting sixth and hit a groundout to the first baseman in the bottom of the second inning in his first at-bat of the evening.

The Martian scored his first hit of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning with a grounder through the hole into the opposite field. He hit as a right-hander against the left-hander Sam LongHe struck out a 2-2 curveball in the bottom of the sixth inning. He flew out to shortstop in the seventh inning and finished the game 1-for-4 with one run scored.

– After Dominguez' single in the fourth, Oswaldo Cabrera went and Alex Verdugo hit a three-run home run that gave the Yanks a 3-2 lead. It was Verdugo's 12th home run of the year, but only his fourth since May 30.

– The Yankees bullpen did its job on Monday night. Jake Cousins threw a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts and a walk. Lukas Weber allowed one hit and struck out two Royals in the eighth inning. Daniela B. finished with a 1-2-3 ninth, including one strikeout.

MVP of the game: Austin Wells

After a throwing error in the first inning that led to a run, Wells hit 2-for-5 home runs and got the Yankees going with a three-run home run, followed by an RBI double later on.
