Hamill paid tribute to Jones in January on what would have been his 93rd birthday.

“To the one and only James Earl Jones: 🎂 A GIANT on stage and screen! Wishing you all the best on your special day,” Hamill wrote under two photos of Jones on Instagram. “Proud to call you #DadVader,” he added.

“With love and deep appreciation, Mar🐫”

In 2017, Hamill was on hand at the Tony Awards to honor Jones, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas also paid tribute to Jones in a statement to the Washington Post.

“James was an incredible actor, a unique voice in both art and spirit,” Lucas said. “For nearly half a century he was Darth Vader, but the secret behind it all is that he was a wonderful human being. He brought depth, sincerity and meaning to all of his roles, including the devoted husband of the late Ceci and the father of Flynn.”

“James will be missed by so many of us… friends and fans alike,” he added.

Jones first voiced the role of Darth Vader in 1977 in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. He would remain Vader’s voice for the next 50 years.

Jones lent his booming voice not only to Darth Vader, but also to characters such as Mufasa in the 1994 Disney animated hit “The Lion King,” the hardware store voice box in 2005's “Robots,” and the giant in the 2009 film version of the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

He has also appeared in films such as “The Sandlot,” “Field of Dreams,” “Warning Shot,” and “Coming to America.”

In addition to his honorary Oscar in 2011, Jones even received the coveted EGOT.
