Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra leak reveals major upgrade to compete with iPhone 16 Pro Max

There is a lot of excitement online right now about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. However, that hasn't stopped leakers from releasing new information about the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which is still on the distant horizon.

Well-known leaker Ice Universe posted new details about the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra's cameras on X (formerly Twitter). He said some of the S24 Ultra's cameras will remain unchanged, but a major upgrade could help the Ultra outperform the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, which are planned for Apple's “Glowtime” event.

According to the leak, the S25 Ultra's ultra-wide-angle camera could see a significant upgrade. It will switch to a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a 1/2.52-inch sensor, 0.7µm pixels, and an f/1.9 aperture. Like many modern smartphone cameras, it will use pixel binning (combining multiple pixels into larger virtual pixels) for improved photo quality and better low-light performance.

For comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which takes excellent ultra-wide angle images, offers a 12MP camera with a 1/2.55-inch sensor and 1.4µm pixels. Putting the two phones side by side, it's easy to spot the differences – the higher resolution alone makes the changes exciting. Combined with the pixel change, we were able to see some fantastic ultra-wide angle images that rivaled those taken with the main lens.

According to Ice Universe, the rest of the cameras remain unchanged. The main lens is still a 200MP camera, the 3x is still a 10MP lens (original rumors suggested the 3X might also get the 50MP boost, but that doesn't seem to be the case) and the 5x is still 50MP.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max, Samsung's biggest competitor in the high-end phone space, is rumored to get a 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens, which, if the rumors are true, will put it on par with Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra. Of course, since these are rumors, they must be taken with a grain of salt, as there can always be inaccuracies or changes in plans as the S25 Ultra gets closer to launch.
