Drew Rosenhaus calls for the firing of police officers who arrested Tyreek Hill

The bodycam video of Tyreek Hill's arrest shows an extreme, punitive response to the perception that Hill was uncooperative and uncompliant with police officers. In my view, this was less about ensuring his cooperation and obedience and more about teaching him a lesson for not immediately cooperating and obeying.

Hill's agent Drew Rosenhaus appeared today with Dan LeBatard. And Rosenhaus was asked for his opinion on what Miami-Dade police should do in light of the video evidence.

“Personally, I think that the police officers who did this to Tyreek should not be in this position,” Rosenhaus said as the bodycam video played. “They should be fired. Look at the guy that just kicked him. That guy should be fired. This is out of control. The guy that jumped in [and] put him in a chokehold? There's no reason for a police officer to have a badge that functions like that unless Tyreek was aggressive or violent or resisting in any way. It was horrific the way they treated him. They didn't treat him like a human being.”

Does Hill also think that the police officers should be fired?

“Well, I'll let Tyreek speak to that,” Rosenhaus said. “That's my opinion. He and I haven't had that specific discussion. But I would certainly recommend to Tyreek and the legal team that we pursue this. You know, I think he deserves an apology from every single one of the police officers involved. And those who abused their authority and power, in my opinion, should not be on duty going forward.”

In my opinion, Hill and the police need to find common ground, accept some responsibility for the situation (the police seem to bear more responsibility, but Hill was not entirely innocent), and find a way to educate citizens and police officers on the best way to proceed during traffic stops and other interactions. This could prevent unnecessary problems in the future. And could literally save lives.

Ultimately, force should only be used when absolutely necessary. If someone is initially uncooperative and then becomes cooperative once it is clear that force will be used, the plug should be pulled, as in this case, by yanking the man out of the car, forcing him to the ground, handcuffing him, and doing whatever else happens.
