Brazilian dog goes viral for his skills in footvolley, a mix of beach volleyball and soccer

A Brazilian Border Collie named Floki has become known for his incredible athletic skills in footvolley, which is part soccer, part volleyball.

According to the Associated Press, Floki has drawn crowds in Brazil, where he tirelessly plays the sport, chasing the ball and hitting it over the net for hours.

Gustavo Rodrigues, Floki's owner, happens to be a footvolley coach. Rodrigues noticed the border collie's energy – and his potential for footvolley – when he was chasing and jumping after balloons at just two months old.

Floki then took part in an “Altinha,” in which a soccer ball is held in the air between people standing in a circle. The now three-year-old puppy has conquered the internet as a footvolley star.

This ability lends itself well to the hybrid sport, which follows the same rules as beach volleyball but uses a shorter net, and has similarities to soccer, where players cannot use their hands and arms.

On any normal weekend, Floki and Rodrigues can participate in beach games – with lots of spectators. “It gets people talking and making fun of them,” Rodrigues told the AP about Floki's skills. “Nobody likes to lose a point against him, so people play with full commitment against us.”

Floki's focus, speed and agility are important skills on the footvolley court. According to the American Kennel Club, Border Collies are extremely smart and the breed has broken records for intelligence and other skills, so it's no surprise how Floki learned the game.

The Border Collie also seems to have a certain strategy. “He does things that even some professionals don't do – like positioning himself on the field,” Rodrigues also explained.

“Sometimes the ball goes from one side (of the court) to the other, and he doesn't turn his back to it. He turns to the ball to keep hitting it straight.”

When Floki and Rodrigues play footvolley together, the dog barks at his owner to pass him the ball, according to AP. When they score a point, Floki sometimes jumps into Rodrigues' arms. Sometimes he gets a high-five, too.

At the time of publication, Floki had over 415,000 followers on Instagram – and it's clear why he has so many fans. In a video from March, puppy Rodrigues tosses a soccer ball back and forth with his nose.

Another clip from December shows Floki in action on the beach, taking part in a game of footvolley. At one point, Rodrigues and Floki score a point and the dog gives his owner a high-five to his delight.

Many fans comment on the videos and joke that Floki is better at footvolley than some of their friends. Others are impressed by how happy Rodrigues and his dog are spending their time together.
