Social media model now charged with DUI manslaughter after fatal Miami car crash – NBC 6 South Florida

A self-proclaimed social media model was handcuffed in court and sent back to jail on Tuesday after it was revealed that prosecutors had filed two charges of manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol against her.

Maecee Marie Lathers now faces 10 charges for allegedly driving under the influence of a substance called “pink cocaine” and causing a fatal crash that killed two people in downtown Miami. She is accused of manslaughter, reckless driving, driving without a license and causing personal injury, among other things.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the toxicology report found several drugs in the defendant's body. Alcohol was not found.

In response, prosecutors charged the 24-year-old with two counts of DUI manslaughter for driving while under the influence of drugs and causing a crash that killed Abraham Molina and Jesus Rubio. Lathers is also charged with assaulting Juanita Hernandez, a passenger and friend of Molina.

On Tuesday, Hernandez faced the woman who killed her future husband and her friend.

“It was a horrible feeling,” Hernandez told NBC6 when she saw Lathers in court. “She didn't look remorseful.”

Police found Lathers vomiting in downtown Miami on August 10, minutes after she drove her white Mercedes into a black Range Rover and a silver Suzuki, killing two people, according to a police report. One of the two had to be extricated but died at the hospital. The other victim was killed at the scene.

Lathers told police that she was under the influence of the party drug Tusi, that she came from the future and that she had a crystal ball.

Lathers was placed under house arrest following her arrest last month, but on Tuesday prosecutors requested that Lathers be held in custody pending her trial.

Lathers appeared surprised and was told to sit with the other inmates. At times she lowered her head and shook it.

Lathers, who pleaded not guilty to all 10 counts, will have the opportunity to seek bail next week, while prosecutors will oppose any form of release. Until then, Lathers will be held in a county jail.

“She is a danger to society,” Hernandez told NBC6.

Records show that Lathers was traveling at approximately 57 mph with the accelerator pedal at 100 percent five seconds before the crash. Records show the car then accelerated to 78 mph when it struck another vehicle.
