Who Styles Chappell Roan's Viral Makeup? This Greater Cincinnati

Andrew Dahling secretly wore his mother's makeup at age 8 while living in Hebron, Kentucky.

Now he's found viral success as the makeup artist for Chappell Roan, the pop princess turned MTV Video Music Award nominee who rose to massive fame.

Roan first rose to mainstream popularity as the opening act for Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour. Since then, she's become a chart-topping “queer pop superstar” defined by her drag queen aesthetic, which relies largely on—you guessed it—makeup.

In June, Dahling designed the star's makeup for her Governor's Ball in New York City. The appearance dominated both social media posts and Rolling Stone headlines, with images of Roan painted head-to-toe green like the Statue of Liberty, an undertaking that took about five hours, according to Dahling.

The video of Rolling Stone's performance at the Governor's Ball alone has been viewed well over 8 million times on TikTok. The look, which was put together by Dahling's makeup and styling by wardrobe expert Genesis Webb, cemented Roan's status as, in the words of Vogue, “a pop superstar in the making.”
