Jon Stewart urges breakthrough to provide comprehensive supplies to first 9/11 troops

WASHINGTON (AP) — The first U.S. troops deployed after the Sept. 11 attacks are suffering from radiation exposure that the government has yet to officially acknowledge 23 years later. And it's one final group that comedian Jon Stewart can't put behind him. Troops deployed to a former Soviet base in Uzbekistan found clumps of yellow powder that a Defense Department site survey revealed to be highly radioactive uranium. In the years since, thousands of those veterans have reported cancer, kidney problems and other ailments. But their treatment isn't covered by a key veterans' assistance law. Stewart is pushing the Biden administration for changes to cover those veterans' medical bills, some of whom met with a Defense Department official this week.

NFL investigates sexual assault lawsuit against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson

CLEVELAND (AP) — The NFL is investigating the recent civil lawsuit against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson to determine whether he violated the league's code of conduct. On Monday, a woman in Texas accused Watson of sexual assault in 2020 when he played for Houston. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is reviewing the complaint. In the lawsuit, the woman claims Watson sexually assaulted her during an incident in her apartment. Watson was suspended by the league for 11 games in 2022 after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior during massage therapy sessions. The Browns traded five draft picks for the three-time Pro Bowler in 2022.

HOUSTON (AP) — Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson has been ordered by a Texas judge to turn over his personal assets to pay off a debt that has grown to more than $12 million. On Monday, a Houston judge granted the bankruptcy trustee's request that police accompany him to Peterson's suburban Houston home so he can inventory assets that can be sold. Attorneys for Peterson did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

Two Delta planes collide on a runway in Atlanta, with the tail of one

ATLANTA (AP) — Two planes collided on a taxiway at Atlanta airport, with a larger aircraft knocking over the tail of a smaller regional jet. No injuries were reported in the incident Tuesday morning and no fire occurred. Delta Air Lines says passengers are being rebooked on other flights. Starbucks' new CEO wants to revive the coffeehouse atmosphere

Starbucks' new chairman and CEO says he wants to focus on improving service and reestablishing the struggling coffee giant's stores as gathering places. In an open letter posted on the company's website on Tuesday, Brian Niccol said Starbucks is a beloved brand. But he said he has found a “common feeling that we have strayed from our core” in conversations with employees and customers in recent weeks. Starbucks' sales have fallen this year due to weaker footfall at its U.S. stores and other issues, including increasing competition in China and boycotts in the Middle East. Niccol says improving the store experience for baristas and customers will help change that.

Kate's Insta-worthy, soft-focus video marks a shift in the way the royals tell their story

LONDON (AP) — When the Princess of Wales announced she had finished chemotherapy in a blurry, Instagram-ready video, she showed a candor not usually associated with the British royal family. Unlike previous updates on Kate's health, which sounded like matter-of-fact news, this one had a very different tone. The slickly produced mini-film, released Monday, showed the princess embracing Prince William and their three young children and sharing intimate moments at home with her parents.

King Charles III visits Australia and Samoa to test his endurance after his cancer diagnosis

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III is preparing to visit Australia and Samoa next month. The Oct. 18-26 trip is a long one and will test the monarch's stamina as he recovers from cancer treatment. Buckingham Palace announced the trip on Tuesday, marking a turning point for the 75-year-old king. Charles is slowly returning to public duties after taking a break following his cancer diagnosis in early February. The decision to make such a trip across 12 time zones is being seen as a sign of Charles' recovery, even if the program in Australia will be “restricted.”

Raise a shot glass or two to Wild Turkey’s Buddha of Bourbon.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (AP) — When bourbon fans enter the Wild Turkey visitor center in Kentucky, they may be greeted by Jimmy Russell. But he is no ordinary receptionist. Russell has witnessed much of the distillery's history. For 70 years, the distillery was Russell's second home. Russell, 89, marks his 70th anniversary at the distillery on Tuesday. For nearly half a century, he was Wild Turkey's master distiller, responsible for production. Now he is spending a few days as a goodwill ambassador, signing whiskey bottles, posing for photos and chatting about his favorite topics – making and drinking bourbon.
