Tyreek Hill calls for the firing of the police officer involved in the incident | NFL

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is calling for the firing of one of the Miami-Dade police officers involved in his arrest on Sunday. Hill issued a statement Tuesday night through his attorney, Julius Collins, saying, “We are calling for the immediate firing of the officer who has been placed on leave. Every action a police officer takes is subject to standard procedures. We believe the officer's use of force was excessive, escalatory and reckless. We are calling for the officer's immediate firing.” Earlier Tuesday, the Miami-Dade Police Department released the identity of the officer under investigation: Officer Danny Torres, who has been on the force for 27 years. According to the department's statement, “Torres remains on administrative duties as the Internal Affairs Bureau investigation is ongoing. We will provide additional information as it becomes available and the outcome of the investigation is complete.” Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, also called for Torres' firing. On “The Dan Le Batard Show” on Tuesday, Rosenhaus said officers did not treat Hill “like a human being” after stopping him before Sunday's home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bodycam footage of the incident shows officers dragging Hill from his black sports car after he disobeyed their orders to roll down his windows. He was forced to the ground and handcuffed. “Personally, I think the officers that did this to Tyreek should not be in that position — they should be fired,” Rosenhaus said, describing what he saw in the video. “Look at the guy that kicked him — he should be fired. That's out of control. The guy that jumped him and put him in a chokehold? There's no reason for a cop to have a badge that functions like that when Tyreek wasn't aggressive, violent or fighting back in any way. It was appalling how they treated him.” The officer’s representatives — attorneys Ignacio Alvarez of the ALGO law firm and Israel Reyes of The Reyes law firm — called in a statement for their client’s immediate reinstatement. The attorneys also said they support Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie Daniels’ call for a review of the incident. According to the statement, the officer in question (later confirmed to be Torres) will not comment on the case until the investigation is complete. Hill, 30, is scheduled to speak Wednesday for the first time since the bodycam footage was released Monday. Hill received citations for reckless driving and driving without a license after being pulled over just blocks from Hard Rock Stadium, hours before the Dolphins’ 20-17 victory on Sunday. The footage released Monday shows Hill and an officer talking before Hill rolls up his car window. The officer then knocks on the window and tells Hill to keep it closed. Hill complied by cracking the door a little, then had more words for the officer, who again told the 30-year-old to be quiet while threatening to drag Hill out of his car. The officer then changed his mind and ordered Hill to get out of the car anyway. Another officer intervened and told Hill he would smash his window if he didn't get out of the car, at which point the same officer opened Hill's door and helped forcefully take him to the ground. His teammate and Dolphins defensive end Calais Campbell was also arrested at the scene after trying to help Hill. However, Campbell was not issued a citation. Miami tight end Jonnu Smith was also there to support Hill. Hill, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, played the last two seasons with the Dolphins. He led the NFL with 1,799 yards on 119 passes caught and tied for the league leader with 13 touchdowns in 16 starts last season. It was the five-time first-team All-Pro's sixth season in which he reached 1,000 yards. – Field Level Media
