Stephen A. Smith says Tyreek Hill bears some blame for the incident with police last Sunday

Stephen A. Smith has made his opinion on the situation in Tyreek Hill clear: he believes that both sides are for Balme.

Following the release of bodycam footage of the confrontation between Hill and Miami-Dade police, Stephen A. believes the Miami Dolphins wide receiver must be held accountable for his behavior during the street stop.

“As for Tyreek Hill, we cannot completely absolve him of responsibility based on the police department's statement,” Smith said.

“They said he was 'uncooperative.' We have a responsibility on this show and on every other platform to do everything we can to save lives. We have to make sure we do everything we can to somehow allow you to live another day and fight this fight. We know how wrong they were. The police went overboard, there are no excuses for that, they should be ashamed of themselves for the way they acted, they just went over the top, that's absolutely true.”

Smith then further criticised the police for their treatment of Hill's teammate Calais Campbell and Jonny Smith, who had stopped at the scene, before offering some further thoughts on Hill's behaviour.

“Here's the thing, we all came on the air and saw the first footage in full, unadulterated support for Tyreek Hill. You pull over, they tell you to roll down your window, what's the first thing Shannon [Sharpe] just talked about? The first thing they do when they stop us, when they stop me, all my windows are rolled down, my hand is on the steering wheel, that's not what Tyreek Hill did,” Smith said.

“Tyreek Hill had his window rolled up, the officer knocked on his window, he didn't knock on his window, he knocked on his window, you hesitated to roll it down, and the first thing you said was, 'Don't knock on my window like that.' … He asks you for your license, you hesitated to give him your license. You said in the postgame conference, 'Hey, guys, what if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?' What if you weren't Tyreek Hill? What would have happened to you if someone who wasn't Tyreek Hill had rolled up the windows, hesitated to roll them down, didn't give you your license right away when you asked for it, and then hesitated to get out of the car when you were told to get out of the car?”

Smith concluded that the officers should “in no way” be excused for their actions and that Hill did not deserve to be dragged from his vehicle, but that the 30-year-old wide receiver should have been more compliant.

“If they stop and tell you to roll down the window, show your license and get out of the car, then you have to do that,” Smith said.

Hill received two traffic tickets.
