Hollywood Friendship: Timeline of the friendship relationship between Martin Short and Steve Martin

While a room full of steel-faced men drink tequila, Steve Martin And Martin Short break out into song.

It was 1986 and the actors were playing a show tune in a dingy bar in Mexico.

She sang and danced in unisonwhich confused the already stunned crowd even more: “My little buttercup has the sweetest smile. Dear little buttercup, won't you stay a while?”

The song didn't fit their surroundings, even though it was intended that way. It was all part of a show and the beginning of an iconic comedic pairing and a lasting friendship.

It's hard to believe, but despite their ease on screen, Martin and Short had only met once before signing on to star in the now cult classic '80s film, which also stars Chevy Chase.

The comedy duo had met two years earlier, Backstage at a one-hour version from Saturday Night Live called The new show. Martin was the guest host of the show.

However, they actually met at Martin's house when Short came to pick up his Amigos script. Their comedic chemistry was soon evident.

“We were on the set of Three amigos!and he did something and I just felt like, 'The' said Martin People in 2022 from his first impression of Short.

“As a comedian, you appreciate people who are funny, and he was just funny.”

In contrast to their unusual experience of saying goodbye to a film at the end of production and never seeing the other cast members again, Martin and Short stayed in touch.

They were soon meeting for dinner and even vacationing together before making three more films.

Martin once joked that he had no influence on the couple's ongoing relationship.

“Marty just always followed me,” he joked in a 2021 interview with The Guardian.

“Every time he changed his number, I found the new one,” Short joked.

All jokes aside, Texan-born Martin and Canadian-born Short are true friends.

Martin once said that if Short was unavailable for one of their dinner parties, he and his wife would simply cancel the party.

“Marty is just really, really funny – and he has so many friends,” Martin told the media company.

“On his birthday, his phone always goes, 'Ding! Ding! Ding!' Oh, look, Steven Spielberg sent Marty a birthday message.”

For more than 40 years, the names Martin and Short have been synonymous on screen with each other and their brilliant comedic timing.

They played side by side in the original two films. Father of the bride Films, numerous SNL appearances, several national comedy stage tours.

“There is just an ease between us,” said Martin People.

“At that age, you know it’s not forever,” Short added.

“So when you feel great and healthy and have your loved ones around you, you appreciate it.”

In recent years, the duo has teamed up with US singer and actress Selena Gomez for the multiple Emmy award-winning series. Only murders in the building.

The unlikely trio has returned for a fourth season of the crime comedy.

“Steve always joked, 'What I love about Marty is that he understands the concept of 60-40,'” Short said The Hollywood Reporter.

“But the reality is, no, these are not issues that matter to us. I think what would bother me about Steve is if he was rude to a waiter or snapped at me, and that's the last thing he would ever do.”

Even after four decades, Marin, 79, and Short, 74, still agree.

“I hosted the Oscars three times. The first two times I was very nervous. But I got over it because I'm a professional,” Martin told the LA Times.

“And the third time, I co-hosted with Alec Baldwin and I wasn't nervous at all. Looking back, I realized, 'Oh, there was someone else out there with me.'

“And that's exactly how I feel about Marty. We love timing things. We love getting it right on point. And we like our interludes that work. Some of the jokes in our Netflix special, we thought, 'Okay, we have to take those out now because people have seen them.'”

“Now, four years later, we say, 'Man, I really miss that joke.' We put it back and nobody remembers it anymore.”
