With the increasing possibility of remote work, many people are looking for places outside of their homes (and offices) to get their tasks done. Coffee shops and neighborhood cafes are among the most popular options for these workers. You might have seen numerous customers busy on their laptops while sipping a beverage or grabbing a quick meal at these places. But is it mandatory to order something while working at these establishments? While the obvious answer seems to be yes, a recent viral X post has shown that not everyone will agree with that.

Bhavya Arora, an X user from Bengaluru, took to the platform to ask for specific recommendations for remote workspaces. She wrote, “Need suggestions for cafes in HSR layout that offer:
1. Strong WiFi
2. Don’t expect to order
3. (Optional) – comfortable seating.”

Her post made big headlines on X and many users criticized her for wanting to work for free at a cafe. Several people pointed out that these are businesses and are not meant to provide free resources. However, some also gave her possible options for such cafes. Check out some of the reactions below:

Responding to this criticism, the X user added more comments to her original post (which has since gone viral), writing, “Guys, why all this anger? Can't a girl just want to work in an empty cafe without ordering? I understand that I should and will clear the table if people are waiting for a table. But if it's empty – WHERE'S THE PROBLEM!” She went on to defend herself, saying, “And cafes know this and are OK with it. I may not order today or tomorrow – but if I go to the same cafe every day, I will order at some point. The cafe WILL recoup its costs. In fact, I may invite my friends too. The group will order at some point.” That's not all. Later, she posted a selfie and revealed that she had found such a place. “Happy to tell you all – had a productive day at Starbucks. Didn't order anything, the lovely staff didn't even bother,” she captioned the photo.

In the UK, remote working in cafes has also recently become the subject of heated debate. Two cafes in the country made headlines for attempting to restrict laptop use during peak hours. Click here to read the full story.
