MTA announces subway and bus changes for September 11 9/11 remembrance ceremony

NEW YORK (WABC) — On Wednesday morning, New Yorkers will gather in Lower Manhattan to mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

The MTA advises customers to avoid the area near the 9/11 Memorial during the ceremonies.

You should be aware of the following changes in public transport:

New York City subways

Line 1 trains will not stop at WTC-Cortlandt station in either direction on September 11 between 12:45 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

New York City buses

Due to the high security precautions surrounding the September 11th commemoration, there will be diversions and delays on many bus routes throughout the day.

Express bus customers whose route passes through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel should expect significant delays, detours and rerouting.

Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

Due to the events of September 11, the NYPD will establish a traffic detour for all Manhattan-bound traffic at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

All Manhattan-bound traffic approaching the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel from the Gowanus (I-278) and Prospect Expressways in Brooklyn will be diverted to the BQE (I-278) eastbound or local streets.

Brooklyn-bound traffic will be restricted at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel as various street and lane closures will restrict traffic to the tunnel only from service streets in Lower Manhattan.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes and/or means of travel. Overhead signs will display instructions for motorists ahead of the planned detour.

Please contact the MTA website for real-time information and service changes across the system.
