A pattern change in the northwest

The Northwest has been hot and dry. Some relief is coming to the region as a low pressure system brings cool and wet conditions. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a marginal (Level 1 of 5) Risk of severe storms on Wednesday and Thursday as the energy moves through. Strong winds and large hail will be the main threat.

A light A tornado threat has been issued for Thursday for the High Plains from Montana into the Dakotas. All threats, including an isolated tornado, are possible Thursday.

If moisture moves into the region, rainfall could trigger flash flood warnings. There is a slight to moderate risk of flooding in parts of Montana and Idaho from Wednesday through Thursday.

At higher elevations there might even be some snow, which is not unusual for September.

Winter weather warnings were reported in Idaho and Montana from Wednesday through Friday. Wet snowfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches are likely above 6,500 feet, with isolated amounts as high as 6 to 10 inches.
