Three people arrested after drug raid and shooting in Detroit apartments

DETROIT (WWJ) – Three people were arrested at the scene of a drug raid and shooting at a northwest Detroit apartment complex Wednesday morning.

Mike Campbell of WWJ Newsradio 950 reported that there was a massive police response to the two-story brick building on Greenfield at Verne, south of W. McNichols.

“They brought all the SWAT equipment,” Campbell said. “They had tanks, trucks, ramming vehicles and personnel carriers, so they could bring out all the personnel with a lot of weapons.”

According to MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, members of the Emergency Support Team (EST) were assisting the County of Macomb Enforcement Team (COMET) in executing a search warrant on the building as part of a drug investigation when someone was seen in the apartments with a weapon.

Shaw said shots were fired as the door approached EST, but MSP is still investigating to determine who fired the shots.

At this point, suspicions of an armed barricade attack were raised and the residents of the apartments were evacuated.

Kenny, who lives in the building, said it was a scary situation. “It wasn't good,” he told Campbell. “I wouldn't wish that on anyone… Very scary, very scary. I was under the bed.”

Nobody was injured.

Shaw said some announcements were made and eventually three suspects came out of the building and were taken into custody.

“And then we used drones, sniffer dogs and our bomb disposal robots to clear the building so everything was safe,” Shaw said. “Thanks to today's technology, we don't have to send people there anymore.”

The names of those arrested were not immediately released as they await expected arraignment.
