KC Mayor introduces new ordinance to help small businesses deal with crime

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – A new ordinance has been introduced to help small businesses in Kansas City recover from and protect themselves from burglaries and vandalism.

Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas announced on Wednesday, Sept. 11, that he has introduced the Back to Business Fund ordinance to help small businesses. The two-pronged program would help eligible residents recover from burglaries and vandalism and add security measures such as cameras and locks.

Mayor Lucas said he will provide more details about the fund during a press conference at 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the Waldo City Barrel, 1740 Holmes St.

The mayor stated that if the ordinance is passed, up to $3,000 per business would be provided for repairs related to incidents that occurred between July 1, 2024, and July 31, 2025. Up to $5,000 per business would be provided for safety measures taken during the same period.

Lucas noted that small business applicants must have a business license from the City of Kansas City and provide documentation of damage and preventive measures. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the funds are exhausted. Grants will be awarded based on availability and program guidelines.

The mayor said the new ordinance is another step in the fight against crime and public safety concerns in Kansas City.
