Democratic Congressman Nadler is criticized for appearing to doze during testimony from families of migrant victims of crime

He wanted to use this to present his arguments.

Longtime Manhattan Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) was ridiculed and criticized after he appeared to close his eyes and rest his head during an emotional House Judiciary Committee hearing on the border crisis on Tuesday.

Lawmakers heard from family members of victims who suffered violence from illegal immigrants, including the mother of murdered 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray of Texas.

Two Republicans on the Judiciary Committee sharply criticized Nadler, the panel's leading Democrat, claiming he did not take the testimony seriously.

“From frustrated families in the audience at the @JudiciaryGOP hearing listening to witnesses who lost loved ones to violent illegal immigrants. Barely any Democrats in attendance – those who……,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) wrote on X next to a photo of the sleepy-looking Nadler.

“In the Judiciary Committee, we hear from mothers of girls and women who have been beaten, raped, strangled, discarded, and a boy poisoned to death with fentanyl. Democrats:” Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) also swiped next to a photo of Nadler.

In his opening remarks, Nadler expressed his condolences to those who died, but also accused Republicans of excessive partisanship.

“I want to take a moment and express my sincere condolences to all of our witnesses who have lost loved ones and their families. I cannot imagine how difficult this loss has been for you and I appreciate you being here to share your stories. May their memories be a blessing,” Nadler said.

“Instead of working across party lines to find meaningful solutions to our broken immigration system, we are sitting in yet another partisan hearing designed to divide us and score political points before the election,” he added.

During the hearing, the panel heard testimony from eight witnesses.

Among them was Alexis Nungaray, who described how her 12-year-old daughter was allegedly stripped naked and strangled to death by two illegal immigrants from Venezuela.

Sitting next to Nungaray was Patty Morin, whose daughter Rachel was allegedly raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant after she went jogging not far from her home.

“One of the ladies who came with me took a photo of the Democrats on the other side as we were talking and telling our stories, us, the mothers, crying mothers, telling our stories – and one of them is sleeping and the other is on the phone,” Morin told Fox News.

“It was so discouraging.”

The friend who took the photo, Cathie Groenewold, sharply criticized the New York congressman.

“I was amazed at Jerry Nadler's carefree attitude,” she told the newspaper. “These women who have lost their children to fentanyl and the most gruesome murders imaginable pour out their hearts and don't have the decency to stand up and give them their undivided attention.”

The Post has reached out to Nadler's office for comment.

Nadler has been caught nodding off while on official business before, including during a 2021 hearing with Attorney General Merrick Garland.
