Justin Timberlake reaches deal in drunk driving case 3 months after his arrest

As PEOPLE confirms, Justin Timberlake has negotiated a deal in his drunk driving case nearly three months after his arrest in Sag Harbor, NY.

The 43-year-old singer is due in court in New York on Friday, September 13. TMZ and the Associated Press report that Timberlake has agreed to plead guilty to a lesser offense after initially being charged with drunken driving.

Timberlake's attorney and a representative for the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Although the star's attorney, Edward Burke Jr., insisted that Timberlake was “not drunk” when he was arrested on June 18, the “Selfish” singer was arrested for drunk driving and two traffic tickets – one for disregarding a stop sign and one for failure to maintain lane.

Timberlake told the arresting officer that he “drank a martini and then followed my friends home,” according to his arrest report, which was obtained by PEOPLE.

The report states that during a routine patrol, an officer allegedly observed Timberlake's BMW 2025 run a stop sign and “fail to stay on the right side of the road.” The officer initiated a traffic stop and found that Timberlake's “eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his breath gave off the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, he was unable to divide his attention, he spoke slowly, was unsteady on his feet, and performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”

The star refused to take a breathalyzer test after being taken to police headquarters – and as a result, his driver's license was revoked for a year at a hearing in New York State in August, which Burke said was “standard for any driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Burke filed a motion to dismiss the case in July, but withdrew it at the above-mentioned hearing in August, where Timberlake also pleaded not guilty and appeared in court virtually from Antwerp, Belgium.

During the same hearing, Sag Harbor Village Judge Carl Irace warned Burke against continuing to speak to the press because Burke's statements “come across as an attempt to poison the case before it even begins.” Irace also threatened to impose a news blackout on the case and require Timberlake to appear in court in person.

At a second hearing in August, it was revealed that a subpoena had been issued for the American Hotel, where Timberlake had been staying before his arrest. The hotel is said to be “compliance” with the case.

Timberlake is currently on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, which will run until June 2025. His next performance is scheduled for September 28 in Newark, NJ.
