Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga – Live updates and analysis

Canelo Alvarez will put his WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight world titles on the line against Edgar Berlanga on Saturday, September 14, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) was the undisputed champion in the 168-pound division before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July after Alvarez decided to face Berlanga instead of the organization's No. 1 mandatory challenger, William Scull.

Alvarez, 34, has won titles in four divisions and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia in May. Since losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 in a light heavyweight title fight, Alvarez has won four fights in a row, all by unanimous decision.

“This is a great fight for the fans,” Alvarez said during a press conference in New York in August where the fight was officially announced. “I know he's coming to give it his all and I will too. This is the kind of fight I really enjoy. I can't wait.”

Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), ranked No. 5 in the super middleweight division by ESPN, scored first-round knockouts in his first 16 professional fights. Since then, he has scored just one KO in his last six fights, a sixth-round TKO against Padraig McCrory in February. This is the first title fight for the 27-year-old Berlanga.

“Canelo will definitely bring out the best in me,” Berlanga said. “Every time I compete, I improve my skills. This fight is all about intelligence. We have to make sure we match him there. It's will against will. We're not running away. We're going to stay right there and do what we do.”
