JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – Thousands are left in the dark after Hurricane Francine made landfall as a Category 2 storm Wednesday night.

In Louisiana, the storm caused over 190,000 power outages, bringing wind speeds of 100 mph.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, saying his declaration would “enable us to mobilize state resources and respond as needed.”

Many schools and school districts in Mississippi have already canceled classes for Thursday.

Rain and wind are expected in our area between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The southernmost counties of southwest Mississippi could experience wind gusts of up to 60 mph, sustained at 40 mph.
