Halsey to perform her new album single “Ego” at the 2024 MTV VMAs: Watch

Come in and marvel at the magnificent wonders of Halsey. The musician brought the world her upcoming album, The great imitator, brought to life at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards with a performance of “Ego,” the album’s latest single.

Halsey rode her bike onto the stage and strutted to the garage of the replica house she'd built for the performance, bringing New Jersey to Long Island. When they opened the door, a three-piece band emerged waiting to rock out with them – including Måneskin's Victoria De Angelis on bass.

The musician arrived at the show with red hair that fell past her shoulders, but opted for a fiery short cut and continued to play with the concept of her upcoming album. All of these different versions of Halsey represent a different piece of the unfolding puzzle.

“I can't keep my feet on the ground/And I'm nervous about what you think of me now/I'm hoping someone comes along/To help me figure it out,” Halsey sings on “Ego,” before diving into the rock sphere she always seems completely at home in. “I guess I should try to kill my ego/'Cause if I don't, my ego might kill me/I'm a grown-up, but somehow lately/I've been acting like a damn baby/I'm really not as happy as I seem.”

Last week, Halsey announced The great imitator with a planned release date of October 25. “I made this record in the space between life and death. And it feels like I've waited an eternity for you to get it,” they wrote in a social media statement. “I'm going to wait a little longer. I've already waited a decade.” The singer has described the album as a “confessional concept album” created during a time of serious illness and emotional transformation.

“I really thought this album might be the last one I ever made. When you get sick like that, you start thinking about how things could have been different,” Halsey said in an album trailer. “What if it didn't turn out that way? 18-year-old Ashley becomes Halsey in 2014.” The album cycles through imaginings of Halsey in different decades. “Am I still Halsey every time? In every timeline?” they ask. “Am I still getting sick? Am I becoming a mother? Am I happy? Lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth?”

Halsey last performed with the Chainsmokers at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards when they performed their chart-topping single “Closer.” Since then, Halsey has released three studio albums, including Hopeless Well Kingdom, Manic, And If I can't have love, I want power.
