2 more tornadoes confirmed in WNY

BUFFALO, NY — Heavy rain continued to fall in western New York state Monday evening, and two more tornadoes were confirmed, one in Grand Island and another in Indian Falls near northern Pembroke.

The National Weather Service Storm Survey Team confirmed that a brief, weak EF-0 tornado touched down in the town of Indian Falls, Genesee County, near NY Route 77 to Little Falls Road at 8:33 p.m. Monday evening. Maximum winds were 75 mph, path length 0.2 miles, width 50 yards, and duration two minutes. About a half dozen trees were damaged or blown down, but all of the trees showed significant rot.

The National Weather Service Storm Survey team also confirmed that an EF-0 tornado-like waterspout made landfall near West River Road and 3rd Avenue on West Grand Island in Erie County at 4:33 p.m. Monday evening. Maximum sustained winds were 85 mph, width was 75 yards, and track length was 1.2 miles.

This brings the total number of tornadoes in WNY in this very active summer season of 2024 to 9 tornadoes (the average is one to two per year) and 31 tornadoes in New York State, both of which are records.
