Ohtani and the Dodgers hit 4 home runs in the 1st inning against the Cubs

LOS ANGELES – Shohei Ohtani, Tommy Edman, Will Smith and Max Muncy each hit a home run in the opening inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night, the first time in franchise history that has happened.

Ohtani opened the game with his career-high 47th home run, a 400-foot smash into center field against Chicago Cubs starter Jordan Wicks. The Japanese superstar recorded his 48th stolen base in the second inning. He is three home runs and two steals away from becoming the first player in Major League Baseball history to record a 50/50 season.

“Every night I feel like he's doing something we've never seen before,” Muncy said, pointing to the 118 mph exit velocity and 19-degree launch angle on Ohtani's home run. “I feel sorry for the fan who tried to catch him.”

Two outs later, Teoscar Hernández singled and scored on Edman's home run into the left pavilion on Wicks' first pitch. Edman, a switch hitter, hit a home run to right in the first inning and then a deep one to left in the eighth, marking the first time he had homered from both sides in a game. He also hit two home runs off two pitches on Tuesday against the Cubs.

“Tommy is out of this world these days,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

Smith followed with a 404-footer to nearly the same spot in left. Muncy was next, sending a massive 401-footer into right field on his bobblehead night.

The four home runs gave the Dodgers a 5-2 lead after the first inning. After blowing a 7-3 lead, they rallied and beat the Cubs 10-8, preventing them from winning the series.

It is the second time this season that the Dodgers have hit four home runs in one inning, the first coming on June 11 in the sixth inning against the Texas Rangers in Los Angeles.

It is also the second time this season that the Dodgers have hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, with Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman delivering the winning blow against the Diamondbacks on August 31. They are the first team since the 1994 Braves to hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of multiple games in a season.
