NTAs viral moments from Kate Garraway's tears to boos

The big and best of the British entertainment world met at the National Television Awards (NTAs).

As it was a fun night on the showbiz calendar, it's no surprise that there were some key moments at the glamorous event that you won't want to miss. There was laughter, fun and, of course, tears at Wednesday night's event at the O2 Arena in London.

Here are the moments from the NTA you need to know…

Emotions ran high as Kate Garraway accepted the award for Best Documentary for Derek's Story at the NTAs while supported by her two children, Darcey and Bill. Draper died in January after contracting Covid in 2020 and never fully recovering.

She told the crowd: “It's a bittersweet thing, isn't it? It's very bitter being here with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they wouldn't have to say anything. We're actually halfway through the first year of premieres. The first Easter and the first birthdays without Derek. It's so strange being here for the first Television Awards without him.”

Derek's story followed on from the success of the documentaries about Derek's fate in Kate Garraway: Finding Derek and Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek. It was also a special date for Garraway as it would have been their 20th wedding anniversary.

Willoughby returned to TV and the stage at the NTAs. The former This Morning star wowed on the red carpet in a silver dress and was reunited with former This Morning co-stars Dermot O'Leary and the pals shared a kiss on the cheek. Her predecessors Cat Deeley and Ben Shepherd also looked glamorous on the red carpet.

It is the first time Willoughby has been the centre of attention at a public event since security guard Gavin Plumb was jailed for plotting to kidnap, rape and murder her, leaving Willoughby terrified and prompting her to quit This Morning.

The TV star had a big role to play on the night as she joined Joel Dommett's presenting team. This time Willoughby was presenting the gong for the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award at the NTAs.

Social media was awash with viewers of the show claiming Martin Lewis looked “pissed off” when he lost twice. He was nominated for best pundit, which David Attenborough won, and lost in the best non-fiction category to Stacey Solomon's Sort Your Life Out.

One of the comments read: “I can see that Martin Lewis was happy for her despite the gritted teeth and the applause.”

Someone else joked: “Martin Lewis is furious.”

Lewis was candid that he couldn't win them all. He wrote: “You can't win them all (or any of them tonight!) but thank you to everyone who voted for me and supported me.”

The crowd erupted in boos as Post Office scandal victim Jo Hamilton announced that post office managers had still not been paid. Hamilton was speaking while accepting the special Impact award for ITV drama Mr Bates versus The Post Office, which tells the story of the injustice faced by post office managers when hundreds of them were falsely accused of theft due to a faulty computer system.

Her emotional words revealing that there had been no change drew a huge outcry of support from the audience, who booed. She told the crowd: “I want you to know that I was in Westminster a few weeks ago and I saw the new minister. And believe me, nothing has changed.”

She added: “That's right. And almost all of those people behind me have not been paid yet. Out of a group of 555, more than 300 have not been paid yet, including Sir Alan Bates.” Mr Bates versus The Post Office was the big winner at the awards ceremony, taking home three prizes.

Break out the champagne, Ant and Dec have won Best TV Presenters for the 23rd year in a row at the National Television Awards (NTAs). Very impressive. They also beat off stiff competition from Claudia Winkleman. Hats off to the nation's favourite duo.

The couple sweetly mentioned that they are both fathers when accepting the awards. Dec said: “Our lives have changed so incredibly since winning these awards, in the last six years of having very young children. We used to go out partying and now we're back to dirty nappies and having to take the kids to school tomorrow.”

He added: “My daughter Isla is six now. She went to school this morning and said: 'Good luck, I hope you win the trophy.' In fact, she said: 'Take my lip balm, I think it's good luck.'”

Mary Berry looked stunning as she proved that some dresses just never go out of style.

The former Bake Off judge wore the same gorgeous blue dress by independent label Damsel In A Dress to the NTAs, 11 years after she first wore it to the event in 2013. The floor-length blue silk dress was so beautiful, she wore it twice.
