65-year-old dies, 25 fall ill after incident involving contaminated water

MYSURU — A tragic incident in Bettahalli village resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man and the illness of 25 others, allegedly due to contaminated water.

Dr PC Kumara Swamy, Mysuru district health officer, said that medical teams were immediately dispatched after receiving complaints of gastroenteritis on Tuesday evening. The village, which has around 300 houses, has been divided into 14 teams, including ASHA workers and health officials, to treat the affected people and inspect 30 houses each. A 24-hour clinic has been set up at the government primary school and water samples are being analysed at the laboratory.

The deceased, Govindegowda, succumbed to symptoms of severe gastrointestinal illness, including vomiting and diarrhoea, reportedly due to delay in medical treatment. Five of the affected persons were admitted to KR Hospital and other private facilities in Mysuru, while the rest are being cared for at home.

The source of the contamination is believed to be water from a local village tank. Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to determine the exact cause of the contamination.
