X-Alternative Bluesky adds video support and sets a daily limit of 10 GB

Building on the momentum generated by the recent ban on X in Brazil, Bluesky is now adding support for videos to its mobile app and desktop site. Users can now post videos up to 60 seconds long, the platform announced in a blog post on Wednesday.

At launch, Bluesky supports videos in four formats: .mp4, .mpeg, .webm and .mov. Each post can only contain one video and you can upload a total of 25 videos or 10GB of video per day. These limits may be adjusted in the future, Bluesky says.

You can add subtitles and captions to your videos to warn viewers about sensitive or adult content. However, to complete uploading a video, you will need to confirm your email address. Bluesky says this is done to reduce spam and malicious content.

Bluesky also processes each video through Hive and Thorn to remove content containing illegal material (e.g. child sexual abuse) and issue warnings for videos where it is required. If a user repeatedly violates the Community Guidelines, Bluesky will ban them from uploading videos.

By default, all videos that appear in your feed will autoplay, but you can easily turn this feature off in the settings. Additionally, if you delete a post that contains a video, it will be removed from the database “shortly afterward,” according to Bluesky.

The option to upload videos will be introduced with version 1.91 of the mobile app. Desktop users can simply refresh the page to see if they have received the update. Unfortunately, not all users will be able to access the feature immediately.

“We are gradually making uploads available to users in increments,” said Paul Frazee, CTO of Bluesky, in a post. “We don't know how long this will take, but we will move as quickly as possible.”
