Billionaire performs first private spacewalk on SpaceX mission Polaris Dawn

Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4, an integrated payment processing solutions company, participated in the first private spacewalk by a group of astronauts who exited a SpaceX capsule several hours late and tested a new line of spacesuits in the company's riskiest mission yet.

Alongside the billionaire entrepreneur are a retired military pilot and two SpaceX employees. The four have been orbiting the Earth aboard the Crew Dragon since the Polaris Dawn mission launched from Florida at dawn on Tuesday.

Isaacman “exited Dragon” and conducted his first “suit mobility tests, which will test overall hand-body control, vertical movement with Skywalker, and foot fixation,” according to a SpaceX post on X at 6:53 a.m.

“We're all busy at home, but from here, work looks like a perfect world,” Isaacman said as he first looked outside the Dragon. Minutes later, he said, “It's beautiful.”

The mission is the latest and riskiest attempt by the Elon Musk-led company to push the boundaries of commercial space travel.

At an altitude of 705 kilometers, the capsule was completely depressurized and the entire crew had to rely on the tight spacesuits developed by SpaceX for their oxygen supply.

Isaacman, 41, is funding the Polaris mission, just as he funded his Inspiration4 flight with SpaceX in 2021.

Billionaire Isaacman, who is also a pilot, has not commented on how much he is paying for the missions, but they are likely to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, considering Crew Dragon's price tag for other flights is around $55 million per seat.

Others in Polaris include mission pilot Scott Poteet, 50, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis, 30, and Anna Menon, 38, both senior engineers. Gillis also conducted a spacewalk after Isaacman completed his exit from the capsule.
